Rohit Shetty is a rare director who has a following of his own. In the past, he has got credited for the success of his super-hits and this time, he is facing brickbats after his latest release, Cirkus, starring Ranveer Singh bombed. But the trade believes that the debacle of this film won’t affect his standing.
Trade analyst Atul Mohan exulted, “It won’t affect Rohit Shetty. Every director falters. Some of the biggest directors have gone through flops. Raj Kapoor’s Mera Naam Joker (1970), Yash Chopra’s Vijay (1988), Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya (2007) and Guzaarish (2010) didn’t work. Even Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra have given flops. Sooraj Barjatya delivered a big debacle in the form of Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003). Did anybody even remotely mention it during the promotions of Uunchai?” He added, “Rohit Shetty would of course be careful with his next film. I am sure he’ll be able to handle the pressure.”
In agreement, film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi said, “Every director has a phase like that, be it Aditya Chopra or Sooraj Barjatya. Out of 15 odd films that Rohit Shetty has made, only 3 have underperformed and all other films were hits or blockbusters. That’s a commendable record.”
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh stated, “Rohit Shetty has delivered 14 hits, one bigger than the other. I don’t feel it would affect his track record. But it must have affected him emotionally. I am sure he has not taken it kindly. You do get taken aback and introspect. I am sure he’ll bounce back with Singham Again. He’s a fantastic storyteller. I genuinely feel that he’s a worthy successor to Manmohan Desai.”
Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise in Jaipur, agreed, “Look at his track record. Most of his films have worked big time. His success ratio is very impressive and one flop film doesn’t change anything.”
