Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has expressed his view that a film's box office earnings are a highly private matter and that viewers should only consider whether the movie was worth the price of admission. He further stated that box office collections should not be the sole criterion for assessing a film's quality, as even mediocre films can perform well financially while superior films may not.
Hansal was responding to a Twitter user who had pointed out the distinction between the box office figures presented by a film producer and those presented by a trade analyst. The user had suggested that on some occasions, a producer might share exaggerated box office numbers, while trade analysts could also make errors in their calculations. Hansal tweeted back and wrote, “Bottom Line: A film's box office is nobody’s business. It impacts ONLY those involved in the film in various ways that are purely transactional and essentially private.”
He further added, “STOP JUDGING FILMS BY B-O (box office) NUMBERS. Terrible films sometimes make a lot of money and good films make less money. Focus on your experience of the film as an audience and not on the film’s collections. Focus on whether the film was worth the price of your ticket not on whether the price of the film star should go up or down.”
