EXCLUSIVE: Farah Khan reveals that her next directorial venture will go on floors this year; also BREAKS silence on what happened about her film with Rohit Shetty

Farah Khan is not just an accomplished choreographer but also an accomplished filmmaker. She debuted as a director with the much-loved Main Hoon Na (2004). This was followed by Om Shanti Om (2007), which broke box office records. Her next film, Tees Maar Khan (2010) was panned and yet, it was a commercial hit. Happy New Year (2014), meanwhile, got a fine response as well as made money at the ticket window.

EXCLUSIVE: Farah Khan reveals that her next directorial venture will go on floors this year; also BREAKS silence on what happened about her film with Rohit Shetty

It’s been nearly seven and a half years since Farah Khan’s last directorial venture was released. Moviegoers and the trade are waiting with bated breath to see her return to direction as she’s one of the rare filmmakers who can make unabashedly entertaining cinema, and that’s the need of the hour.

Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to her when she completed 30 years in Bollywood. When asked when she’ll start her next film, she revealed, “It’ll happen this year.”

When asked for details about the cast, script etc, she quipped, “I have become older and wiser. I’ll keep it to myself. When the shooting starts, I’d announce it on that day!”

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has featured in three out of four of her films. Will he be seen in her film? “I don’t know,” she replied.

There were murmurs last year that Farah Khan would remake Vijay’s hit Tamil film Master (2021) featuring superstar Salman Khan. Farah denied any such development and said, “I am approached every week for some movie or the other. It is my goodness that I don’t show off about it. And no, I was never (remaking Master).”

In 2019, however, she was definitely directing a film, which was supposed to be produced by Rohit Shetty. At this, Farah Khan narrated, “With Rohit Shetty, unfortunately, just two weeks before we were going to put up the set, things went for a toss. Now, in hindsight if you see, it was good as we were going to start shooting in January 2020. For three months, we had a huge set put up and then lockdown happened in March. I always feel that your curses become your blessings after some time. So, I am more relaxed now. Things will fall into place. I can’t struggle anymore.”

She continued, “For Main Hoon Na, I struggled a lot to make my first movie even though Shah Rukh was my best friend and I had access to him. Still, he didn’t give everything to me on a silver platter. He made me work for it and he made me wait for three years. In hindsight, I feel it was good as I was not ready. But then, I’d wake up with angst in my heart. I’d ask myself ‘Why am I not making a film?’ And this habit of giving gaalis on the mic, I must have learnt during those three years (laughs)!”

A year or two after Happy New Year, Farah Khan had expressed a desire to make a small-budget film with 2 heroines. Farah stated, “Thank God, I didn’t end up doing these things. It was a phase in my life when I had the desire to make a critically acclaimed film. But my husband (Shirish Kunder) gave me very good advice. He said ‘Tu choti picture banayegi, uski bhi yeh log band bajayenge. Aur usme tu paise bhi nahi kamayegi’. He also said, ‘If it’s a Farah Khan film, viewers expect a thali. They want action, romance, song, drama, humour, good choreography etc. Don’t give them just one katori’! So I truly believe that either my dad or my grandmother or the universe looks after me. Whenever I’ve forced things to happen and it doesn’t, I used to get upset but now I thank God. I feel that I guess I have been saved.”
